My gorgeous niece Amy (I’m very biased) has said to me several times, “you hate parsley, don’t you?”. And every time I have to remind her that “no, I love parsley”, it’s Carrie Bradshaw from Sex in the City that hates it. It must be the blonde curly hair that confuses her, but I love that character so I definitely take it as a complement. So what’s so fecking great about parsley anyway? Oh where on earth do I begin!?

Parsley is one of the most amazing herbs out there in regards to health benefits. When I was studying nutrition one of my lecturers would rave about it non-stop, so much so that I thought he was a bit nuts due his parsley obsession.¬† First let’s take a look at some the nutrients that are packed into this delicious herb.

Nutritional Profile

  • Vit A
  • Vit C
  • Vit K
  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Calcium

  • Potassium
  • Antioxidants

Yep, parsley really packs punch when it comes to nutrients, and all these nutrients in turn provide the body with fantastic health benefits.

Health Benefits of Parsley

  • It has very high levels of alkaline minerals, think anti-inflammatory! These minerals help the body maintain a healthy pH balance, which in turn helps to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is at the root of nearly all disease, so it’s a total no brainer to add this super herb into your diet on a regular basis.
  • It’s high in antioxidants which helps reduce free radicals and oxidation in the body. What the hell does this mean? In a nutshell it helps to protect the cells from damage and aging, keeping your beautiful cells healthy and vibrant. This is so important for good health, not to mention anti-aging.
  • Parsley is great for the digestive system. It’s a natural diuretic as well as being very soothing to the digestive system, and can help to ease bloating, gas and constipation. Parsley is also a great source of fibre, which helps to maintain regular bowel movements.
  • Due to its high levels of Vit K and calcium, parsley is super for healthy, strong bones, specifically maintaining bone density.
  • Adding parsley to you diet is so beneficial for your immune system for a couple of reasons. One, it’s high in Vit C which is super important for a high functioning immune system. And two, as I mentioned above, parsley helps the body maintain a healthy pH balance. An alkaline inner environment is fantastic for a healthy gut because the majority of the immune system is housed in the gut! Lets recap.

    1. Parsley = high in Vit C = stronger immune system.
    2. Parsley = alkaline minerals = reduced inflammation = better gut health = healthier immune system.

  • Due to its high levels of Vit A parsley helps to protect the health of the eyes. Vit A is also a very powerful antioxidant which helps fight the signs of aging, helping the skin maintain that youthful glow.

It’s super easy to add parsley into your diet. I like to add it to salads, juices, soup and other recipes, or simply munch on a bunch as I’m buzzing around the kitchen. Whether it’s flat leaf or curly parsley that you buy, always keep in mind that it’s best to buy organic, this will cut down on toxins and¬†ensure that you get the most from this outstanding super herb.
