Healthy Chocolate Sauce

My absolute favourite breakfast is pancakes smothered in healthy chocolate sauce! I eat them a couple of times a week, so it’s really important to me that I can enjoy them guilt free. So many of the chocolate sauces and spreads on the market are super high in sugar and also contain crappy low grade fats. And while they may taste great going down, their low quality ingredients can play havoc with your digestive system, hormones and health in general. The great thing about making your own chocolate sauce from scratch is that you are in control of what goes into it. When you eat processed foods you are at the mercy of the food companies, and for most, their bottom line is not high quality ingredients, it’s profit. Also bear in mind that sugar is highly addictive and can be found in a large percentage of processed food. Hmmm is this an accident, or well thought out by food companies? Can you see now why making your own chocolate sauce is a really, really good idea?

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. of coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 tsp. honey or maple syrup (a little more if desired)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla (optional)
  • Splash of unsweetened almond milk

Method

  1. Melt the coconut oil over a low heat. Once melted take off the heat and allow to sit for a minute or two, then add the cacao. Mix well (I use a hand whisk), the mixture will start to thicken then add a tbsp. of almond milk. Mix well and add the maple syrup, mix again.
  2. At this point you may need to add a little more almond milk to reach a consistency you are happy with. Sometimes I find the sauce goes very runny or gets very thick. If it gets too runny I return it to the heat for 10 – 30 seconds, stirring all the time and it will thicken nicely. If it gets too thick just add a little more almond milk and whisk until smooth.
